What to Bring to Broome: Campervan Packing List

Packing for a Broome campervan trip is mostly about distance and heat. The town has shops, but once you head for the Kimberley the next supplies can be a long way off.

What the operator usually supplies

Campervans and 4WD campers from the depot in Broome come with the basics fitted, so you need not duplicate them. The exact kit varies, so confirm it at handover.

  • Fridge or cooler, gas cooker and cooking fuel
  • Cookware, crockery, cutlery and a kettle
  • Water tank, gas bottle and power setup
  • Camping chairs, table and often an awning
  • First aid kit, fire extinguisher and basic tools
  • Bedding and linen on some vehicles, but not all
Tip

Ask for the equipment list before you shop, so you are not buying a second frying pan or a spare gas bottle you will never use.

What to bring yourself

Think layers for cool mornings and shade for hot middles. Dry-season nights and inland nights can drop sharply once the sun is gone.

  • Clothing for heat plus a warm layer for evenings
  • Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Refillable water bottles and a large water container
  • Toiletries, towels and any medication you need
  • A torch or headlamp for cooking and packing after dark
  • Phone charger, power bank and a 12-volt adaptor
  • A sleeping bag if bedding is not included

Water, food and fuel

Water and fuel decide how far you can go, so a campervan with a fridge and tank earns its keep on long legs. Carry more water than you think you need and treat refills as a plan to check, not a certainty.

  • Carry drinking water for the whole party, plus spare
  • Shop for food in Broome before heading north or east
  • Fill the tank before long sealed runs
  • Check the distances ahead so you know the next stop
Approximate road distances and road length
DestinationDistance and surface
Derby 220 km, sealed
Fitzroy Crossing 396 km, sealed
Kununurra 1,044 km, sealed highway
Gibb River Road 647 km long, mostly unsealed
Note

Treat these as planning figures. Confirm current road conditions locally before setting out, because wet-season closures change quickly.

Signal, power and safety

Coverage thins out fast away from towns. Do not rely on your phone for navigation or emergencies beyond the main centres.

  • Download offline maps before you leave coverage
  • Tell someone your route and expected arrival
  • Keep a printed contact list for the operator

Questions on this road

How much water should we carry?

Carry drinking water for every person for the whole stretch between refill points, plus a reserve. Treat refill points as a plan to check, not a guarantee.

Is bedding included in the hire?

It varies by vehicle. Some campervans include linen and some are hired bare, so confirm at handover and pack a sleeping bag if unsure.

Do we need to bring cooking gear?

Usually not, as cookware and cutlery are part of the standard kit. Ask for the equipment list so you know what your vehicle carries.

Will our phones work in the Kimberley?

Coverage is good around towns but drops away quickly on remote routes. Download offline maps and set a check-in plan before you leave.
